My boiled down analysis is that polyphasic sleep can be very productive, can reduce your total number of sleep hours required, but it is very hard (for most people) to get started on it, and it puts you out of touch with the rest of the world. It is difficult to socialize normally if you need a nap-nap every four hours, for instance.
